Excerpt from the Aug. 10, 1898 issue of The Elgin Daily Courier

Capt. B. E. Gould wrote from Puerto Rico regarding the safe arrival of the Third Regt.   The voyage was an uneventful one and was enjoyed by nearly all.   Some were troubled with seasickness, but it was not of a serious nature.   The Regt. Was still on board the transport when the letter was ******.   A view of the island was a revelation to the soldiers, as they had never seen tropical foliage of such magnificent *****.
