Alphonso “Punch' LaPointe, 72 years old, a lifelong resident of Elgin, died this morning in veterans hospital at Hines, Ill., where he had been receiving treatment since Feb. 3.
He was born in this city on June 14, a son of Joseph and Zoe LaPointe.
Mr. LaPointe was one of Elgin's first newsboys, selling “extras” of many notable events before the turn of the century. A cook by trade, he worked for many years for Charles E. Giertz & Son, contractors operating the cook house for bangs of men engaged in construction work.
During the Spanish American war he served in Cuba with Company D of Aurora.
Mr. Lapoint was never married and the only survivor is a brother, Joseph LaPointe of this city.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
