Obit – May 16, 1898 issue of the Elgin Daily News
Edgar D. Beebe, member of Co. G, Third regiment, is being brought home by his mother dead..Sundays telegram was received by his parents from the surgeon in charge of St. John's hospital, Springfield saying that “Edgar was dangerously sick. Come!” It is understood spinal meningitis was the cause of his death. Mrs. Beebe and Miss Maud McMaster started on the first train. Today at noon, Mr. Beebe received a telegram saying they would be home on the limited with the body.
Edgar was 22 years old the eighth of July. He joined the guards from Woodstock. Further particulars are not obtainable at this time. It is probable that the sad company will reach Elgin at 6:35.
The consequences of the war are coming very near to us. Not the News only, but the entire city of Elgin tender to Mr. And Mrs. Beebe their heart-felt sympathy. The young man was brave, patriotic, and was one of the first to respond to the call of his country. Since going to Springfield he had been attached to the hospital service.
A telegram from Springfield this afternoon says Edgar died Sunday night before his mother arrived.
