Obit for Edward York Aug. 18, 1898 issue of the Kane County Democrat
A.C. Thornburg received a cablegram Tuesday from Corporal Charles Fuller, Co. E Third Illinois, saying that Edward C. York, also a member of Co. E., was dead.
No details of the death were given, but it is believed he was shot. Recently he was appointed an orderly and his duties necessarily exposed him to sharpshooters. If he had been taken sick it is not thought his death would have been so sudden. Besides it was reported but a short time ago that the company was all well.
Although the cablegram was received last night it is probable that the death occurred several days ago, as both the deceased and Corporal Fuller who sent the message, were with Gen. Brooke in the interior of Porto Rico and the message was sent from Ponce.
The deceased was 22 years old last March. He was born in Chicago, but spent the greater part of his life at Wichita, Kansas. His father died at the latter place and with his mother ans sister he moved to Elgin four years ago.
While in Wichata, the deceased was a member of the state militia and when he moved to Elgin joined the guards. He left for Springfield with his company on the first call for volunteers and has been with them since.
Edward York will be remembered as a tall, light complected young man, genial and high hearted. He was popular not only with his companions ******* *** factory and later by the American Express company.
The death will be general y regretted by the people of Elgin, who were congratulating themselves since the announcement of peace, on the good fortune that attended our soldiers while invading the foreign country. The deceased leaves a mother, Mrs. Isabele York, who resides on Prairie street and a sister, Mrs. Charles Fuller. A **** Thornburg is an uncle. Deceased was a member of the Bugle Corps and carried a ****** ***.
