       Excerpt from Aug. 3, 1898 issue of the Elgin Daily Courier.
     Guy Wilber, of Carpentersville who enlisted in a Wisc. Regiment wrote home from Jacksonville, Fla. Where he is now stationed.   He says the sand on the roads is six inches deep and mules are need (sic) for all truck purposes, Horses being usable to stand the strain.   The foliage and grass are scant and milk sells for 10 cents q quart.   The soldiers sleep in tents 4X4, just large enough for two.   He visited St. Augustine and viewed Fort Monroe, built two hundred and fifty years ago.   Outside the courtyard are prison calls (Walls) and sealed vaults where the Spanish use to
